Roman Census as Roman Religio – First Stirrings of the “Fourth Philosophy”?

Face à un certain scepticisme récent, l’objectif de cet article est de contextualiser plus complètement les dimensions religieuses de la révolte de Judas le Galiléen en examinant comment la religion romaine aurait également été impliquée. Après avoir défendu les motivations « théo-politiques » de Judas en examinant les sources, l’étude explorera le processus romain d’annexion de la Judée en essayant de mettre en évidence des angoisses religieuses plausibles et des points névralgiques, tant du côté romain que du côté juif. Il sera finalement suggéré que la provincialisation de la Judée par Rome peut être lue comme une provocation religieuse inévitable pour des personnages juifs tels que Judas.

Confronting to some recent scepticism, the aim of this paper is to contextualize more fully the religious dimensions of Judas the Galilean’s revolt through an examination of how Roman religion would have also been implicated. After first defending Judas’ own “theo-political” motives through a consideration of the sources, the study will explore the Roman process of annexation in Judea in an attempt to plot plausible religious anxieties and neuralgic points, on both the Roman and Jewish sides. The suggestion will ultimately be made that Rome’s provincialization of Judea may be read as an inevitable religious provocation of Jewish figures like Judas.
