The Transmission of Pomerius’ De Vita Contemplatiua. Part 1: Descriptive catalogue of the complete and partial manuscript witnesses

Le De uita contemplatiua (CPL 998), traité pastoral-ascétique écrit par le rhéteur Pomerius (vi^e siècle), a connu, dès l’Antiquité tardive et jusqu’au début des Temps modernes, une transmission et une réception vastes. Cependant, en dépit de sa popularité et de son influence à travers les âges, cette oeuvre n’a pas suscité un véritable intérêt de la part des spécialistes en littérature patristique. En effet, sa transmission et sa réception n’ont jusqu’à ce jour jamais fait l’objet d’une analyse systématique. En outre, la dernière édition critique disponible du traité, à savoir PL 59, date de 1847. L’article constitue la première des deux parties d’une étude approfondie de la transmission manuscrite du traité de Pomerius. Il offre un catalogue des manuscrits contenant tout ou partie du texte du De uita contemplatiua et, de cette façon, représente une première étape vers une nouvelle édition critique du texte, qui paraîtra dans la Series Latina du Corpus Christianorum.

De uita contemplatiua (CPL 998) is a pastoral-ascetic treatise written by the sixth-century rhetor Pomerius, which had a broad manuscript transmission and a rich Late Antique, Medieval, and Early Modern reception. However, despite its popularity and influence throughout the ages, the work has not attracted much attention from Patristic scholars: its transmission and reception have never been systematically analysed, and the most recent critical edition of the work available, PL 59, dates to 1847. This article forms the first part of a study (in two parts) that provides a comprehensive overview of the manuscript transmission of Pomerius’ treatise. The present article offers a catalogue of the manuscripts containing the complete or partial text of De uita contemplatiua and, in this way, forms the first step towards a new critical edition of Pomerius’ treatise, which will appear in the Series Latina of the Corpus Christianorum.
