Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The seventeenth century saw an exponential increase in printing, partially in the service of a triumphant Catholicism, which left barely visible the persistence of the manuscript book, especially in theology. An exploration of the documentary evidence that has survived the vagaries of history, an analysis of their authors and their chronology, and a careful observation of their form, material, and binding shows that manuscript culture among the theologians of the , mostly in the cloister, was a commonplace, whether for its own sake as intellectual and spiritual perfection, or for composing a true theological work. The manuscripts bear explicit traces of the reading and writing practices of these professionals of dogma, preaching, and controversy. The secondary sources, notably those that are biographical, place these manuscripts in context and give a portrait of the variety of times, places, and motives for the use of manuscripts by these writers.
