Abstract

Abstract

The eleventh-century music treatise known today as represents the efforts of a scholar from the German schools to interpret the influential of Guido of Arezzo. Analysis of the commentary reveals its methodology to be grounded in the practices of medieval glossators, and suggests that the commentary represents the final transformation of a set of glosses on Guido's treatise. The commentary stands, therefore, as evidence for the importance of scholastic methodology to the study of music theory during the eleventh century.
