Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The paper studies the manuscript tradition of Paulinus of Périgueux (fifth century) better than M. Petschenig was able to do in 1888. Palaeographical and codicological advances have enabled us to date manuscripts and identify their origin more surely. The is transmitted in eight surviving manuscripts (ninth to eleventh century) to which can be added the , based on a lost witness. The geographic context (the eastern Carolingian empire) and temporal span (mostly ninth century) of this tradition attests to the congruity of the work with Carolingian ideology. The lacunae, the layout, the divisions in the text, the , and the distribution of the variant readings allow us to produce a stemma with two distinct branches. One of these is subdivided into three subsets, which may indicate that different types of reading existed.
