f Fournival and Propertius: a note on the early history of Leiden, Voss. lat. O 38

On sait que le ms. Leiden Voss. Lat. O 38 de Properce (A), fragmentaire et datant du xiii^e siècle, fut associé au cercle de Richard de Fournival (1201-1260). Bien que les titres en rubrique soient de la même main que celle qui a copié le texte, on peut lire de nombreuses notes marginales d’une main différente (m.2), obligeant d’avancer la date de la transcription du ms. produit par (ou pour) Pétrarque autour de 1333. Le présent article se fonde sur la nature des marginalia, leur relation apparente avec l’encre utilisée dans la décoration des initiales (c. 1230-1250) et une erreur étonnante dans les tituli pour attribuer en voie d’hypothèse à Fournival, ou à un proche contemporain de son cercle, la formulation des tituli ainsi que la main des annotations en marge, m.2.

Leiden Voss. Lat. O 38, the fragmentary thirteenth-century manuscript of Propertius (A), is known to have been associated with the circle of Richard de Fournival (1201-1260). Although the rubricated titles are in the same hand as the scribe of the text, numerous marginal notes appear in a different hand (m.2), which must antedate the transcription of the manuscript by (or for) Petrarch around 1333. This article argues that, given the nature of the marginalia, their apparent relation to the ink used in the decoration of initials (c. 1230-50), and a striking error in the tituli, both the formulation of the tituli and the marginal hand m.2 can be attributed tentatively to Fournival himself, or to a close contemporary associate of his.
