Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Several sixteenth-century editions show that Joseph Scaliger may not have been, as he claims, the first editor of Tibullus to use the . Its readings appear in the margins of Lyons, A. Gryphius, 1573, with their origin unaccounted for. Moreover the circulation of a under the authorship of Tibullus, for which the fragment appears to be the only source, is evidenced in the Lyons area as early as 1540. And there is what may be another collation of the fragment in Bern, Stadt- u. Universitätsbibl., Bongars VI 155. A textual and historical anlysis, however, reveals that the inconsistencies between Scaliger's collation and his reports in his of 1577 are easily accounted for, and that his evaluations of the age and unique pedigree of the fragment contain serious grounds for consideration.
