f The manuscript tradition of John Geometres’ Metaphrasis of the Odes

Parmi les œuvres de Jean Géomètre, un rhétoricien, poète et soldat byzantin du x^e siècle, la Métaphrase des Odes, une paraphrase de neuf péricopes bibliques en 470 dodécasyllabes byzantins a longtemps été privée d’une édition critique, parce que les anciens éditeurs, au nombre de trois, se limitaient à l’emploi des lectures d’un seul manuscrit. En préparation d’une édition scientifique, cet article décrit la tradition complète de 18 manuscrits au total et étudie leurs relations mutuelles. Il finit avec un stemma codicum et la conclusion qu’une édition critique n’est possible que si elle se fonde méticuleusement sur, en premier lieu, les quatre manuscrits suivants : Paris, Bibl. nat., Suppl. gr. 352 (xiii) et 690 (xii^e s.), Oxford, Bodl. Libr., Barocc. 25 (xiv^e s.), et Athos, Iviron 539 (xv^e s.).

Among the works of John Geometres, a tenth century Byzantine rhetorician, poet and soldier, the so-called Metaphrasis of the Odes, a rewording of nine biblical pericopes in 470 Byzantine dodecasyllables, has long been deprived of a critical edition, as former editors, three in number, would limit themselves to the use of the readings of one manuscript only. In preparation of a scholarly edition, this article describes the complete manuscript tradition of, in total, 18 codices, and examines the mutual relations. It ends with a stemma codicum and the conclusion that a critical edition is only possible, if meticulously based, in the first place, on the following four manuscripts: Paris, Bibl. nat., Suppl. gr. 352 (xiii) and 690 (xii), Oxford, Bodl. Libr., Barocc. 25 (xiv), and Athos, Iviron 539 (xv).
