Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This personal and informally written article describes the pleasures and challenges of editing Latin prose texts, both classical and medieval. It covers the collation of manuscripts ; the analysis of the relationships between them ; the establishment of the text ; the allurements of textual criticism ; the importance of prose rhythm ; and the orthography, punctuation and paragraphing of the final product. The author, who draws on fifty years’ experience of this field (from index cards to computers), ends by asking a subversive question : Is there any point in going on editing these texts at all ?
