Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The article studies the manuscript tradition of the so-called “Recension IV” of the commentary on the by Nichomachus. It applies the methods of “material philology”, among others, which allow for a rapid establishment of the relations between most of the manuscript witnesses. The result is that the tradition falls into two families, one being a recension of the other; the prototypes of each family exist in extant manuscripts. It is also shown that unlike the other three “Recensions”, “Recension IV” is not a copy of the lecture notes of Ammonius (or a Byzantine recension of these notes), but an original composition from the Byzantine period.
