L’article examine l’histoire et le contenu d’une copie négligée du Serment de Strasbourg transmis par Nithard - première apparition du français (Troyes, Médiathèque de l’Agglomération Troyenne, 3203). Copié au xvi^e siècle par l’humaniste Pierre Pithou, le ms. comporte un commentaire approfondi, historique et linguistique, sur l’œuvre de Nithard, par ailleurs conservée dans deux mss seulement. Il permet de reconsidérer non seulement l’histoire de la transmission et de la réception du Serment, mais aussi d’étudier les modifications de la conscience historique et la valorisation corrélative de la preuve documentaire. Une sélection représentative des interventions éditoriales de Pithou est donnée en appendice.

This article examines the history and contents of Troyes, Médiathèque de l’Agglomération Troyenne, 3203, an overlooked manuscript copy of an important text by the ninth-century lay author Nithard - a text that contains the Strasbourg oaths, the first appearance of the French language. Copied in the sixteenth century by the hand of the French humanist Troyes, M. A. T. 3203 preserves Pithou’s extensive linguistic and historical commentary on Nithard’s work (a work otherwise extant in only two manuscripts), and allows an opportunity to reconsider not only the history of its transmission and reception, but also what this history reveals about shifts in historical consciousness and the correlative value of evidence. A representative selection of Pithou’s editorial interventions is included in the article’s appendices.
