f Une mystérieuse édition de Galien : les Opuscula varia édités par Théodore Goulston et Thomas Gataker (Londres, 1640)

L’édition d’un choix de traités de Galien avec traduction latine, établie par Theodore Goulson et publiée à Londres par Thomas Gataker en 1640, Κλαυδιου Γαληνου …των σωζομενων τινα. C. Galeni opuscula varia, pose plusieurs problèmes quant au choix des traités, à l’établissement de leurs textes et au contexte de sa publication. L’article étudie le rôle joué par Thomas Gataker dans la préparation et la parution de l’édition, en examinant les annotations manuscrites figurant dans l’exemplaire d’un volume de l’édition bâloise de Galien de 1538 conservé à la Bibliothèque Marsh de Dublin. Cet exemplaire a été découvert et identifié par Vivian Nutton comme étant celui sur lequel a travaillé Theodore Goulston lorsqu’il préparait son édition. L’étude des annotations montre que certaines d’entre elles sont d’une autre main que celle de Goulston. De l’état du volume, on peut aussi conclure que les feuillets correspondant à certains des traités publiés dans l’édition de 1640 appartiennent à un exemplar préparé par Thomas Gataker et destiné à la composition de l’édition. Devant l’état inachevé des émendations auxquelles travaillait Theodore Goulston à sa mort, Thomas Gataker a été contraint de procéder à des choix parfois arbitraires et guidés par des considérations autres que d’ordre textuel.

The 1640 London edition of Claudii Galeni Pergameni Opuscula varia (Londini: typis Richardi Badger: sumptibus Ph. Stephani, et Ch. Meredith, sub Aureo Leone in Cæmeterio Paulino, 1640) by Theodore Goulston raises a number of questions concerning the selection of texts, the establishment of these texts, and the context of their publication. This article discusses the part played by Thomas Gataker in the preparation and publication of the edition, by examining the marginal notations in a copy of the 1538 Basel edition of Galen housed in the Marsh Library in Dublin. This copy was discovered and identified by Vivian Nutton as being the one Theodore Goulston worked on while preparing his edition. A study of the annotations shows that some are in a hand other than Goulston’s. From the state of the volume, one can also conclude that the leaves corresponding to certain treatises published in the 1640 edition belong to an exemplar prepared by Thomas Gataker for the edition. Given the unfinished state of the emendations on which Theodore Goulston was working at his death, Thomas Gataker was obliged to make choices that are sometimes arbitrary and respond to religious as well as scholarly considerations.
