f La ou les traduction(s) française(s) du De casibus virorum illustrium de Giovanni Boccaccio au XV^e siècle ? Mise au point sur l’histoire d’« un » texte (I)

L’objectif de cet article est de déterminer la nature du rapport (dépendance ou indépendance, totale ou partielle) entre la première et la seconde version de la traduction du De casibus virorum illustrium de Giovanni Boccaccio par Laurent de Premierfait (1^re version en 1400 et 2^e version en 1409-1410) et d’ainsi reconsidérer les « certitudes » qui ont jusqu’ici conditionné l’étude et l’édition de ces deux témoins majeurs de la diffusion de l’humanisme italien en France et en Europe, et de leur tradition manuscrite et imprimée. À partir d’un examen de tous les manuscrits et imprimés conservés, l’article démontre que ces deux versions sont intrinsèquement liées (la seconde version étant la révision et non la retraduction de la première) et qu’il n’est plus légitime de les étudier et de les éditer séparément. L’article examine également d’autres révisions de la première version, jusqu’ici inconnues de la critique.

The paper assesses the nature of the relation (dependent or independent, total or partial) between the first and the second version of the French translation of Giovanni Boccaccio’s De casibus virorum illustrium by Laurent de Premierfait (1^st version in 1400 and 2^nd version in 1409-1410). In so doing, it reconsiders the « certainties » that have until now framed studies and editions of these two major manifestations of the circulation and dissemination of Italian humanism in France and in Europe, and of their respective manuscript and printed traditions. On the basis of an investigation of all surviving manuscripts and printed books, this paper demonstrates that these two versions are closely connected (the second being a revision and not a retranslation of the first) and that it is no longer justified to study and edit them separately. The paper also examines other revisions of the first version that have passed unnoticed by scholars.
